What Makes The Lookout Towers the Ultimate Getaway
Even with our modern accommodations and finest furnishings, what truly makes The Lookout Towers exceptional is the majestic beauty of Montana, paired with its stunning year-round landscape and vibrant local experiences.
The vast expanse of Yellowstone National Park is accessible via five main entrances, often called “Gates,” each offering a unique starting point and connection to different park highlights. The North Gate (Gardiner, MT) is the only one open to vehicles year-round, marked by the historic Roosevelt Arch; the West Gate (West Yellowstone, MT) is the busiest and provides the quickest access to iconic geothermal features like Old Faithful; the South Gate connects directly with Grand Teton National Park; while the East and Northeast Gates offer picturesque routes to Yellowstone Lake and the famous wildlife viewing in Lamar Valley, respectively. These gateway towns are vital hubs that help funnel millions of visitors into the diverse ecosystems and geological wonders of the world’s first national park.
The Madison River begins within the northwestern part of Yellowstone National Park at Madison Junction, where the Firehole and Gibbon rivers converge—a spot notable because the Firehole River’s waters are warmed by the park’s geothermal features. After flowing out of Yellowstone’s West Gate and through Hebgen and Quake Lakes in Montana, the Madison flows northward for 183 miles. It is globally recognized as one of Montana’s premier “blue ribbon” trout streams and is a mecca for fly-fishing enthusiasts. Critically, the Madison joins the Jefferson and Gallatin rivers at Three Forks, Montana, to officially form the headwaters of the mighty Missouri River.
